For this, the first episode of Wingwoman, I spoke to Brita Fernandez Schmidt.
Brita is the Executive Director of Women for Women International – UK – an incredible charity that since 1993, has helped more than 479,000 marginalised women in 8 countries affected by war and conflict.
Brita is responsible for the operation and management of Women for Women International in the UK and Europe. Brita is an advocate and promoter of women’s empowerment, women’s rights and equality. She frequently writes about the challenges women face all over the world in the context of poverty and conflict. Brita is a public speaker on these issues and has lived and worked in over 16 countries spanning three continents.
Brita has led several influential women’s organisations and networks and has run Women for Women in the UK for almost 10 years. She has grown the organisation from when it first started in the UK to a medium-sized charity which is helping thousands of women in countries affected by conflict and raising millions through effective and innovative donor relationships and partnerships. She is also the Chair of Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS).
We chat about tapping into our own power and how that can benefit others as well as ourselves, how to deal with emotional pain, preparing for and getting through a TED talk (!) and the creative magic that can happen when people come together.
Thank you for listening x
